Transforming a Sloping Lawn into an Entertaining Space
A sloping back lawn can pose a challenging obstacle for homeowners who want to create an outdoor space for entertaining guests. However, with the right design and planning, it is possible to transform a steep hill into a functional, beautiful area perfect for hosting larger gatherings. The goal of this project was to expand the existing patio while surrounding it with plants of varied scales, textures, and colors, creating an outdoor space that is both inviting and visually interesting.
The design process and planning required careful consideration of the slope and existing landscape. The addition of a larger patio area on a level surface opened up the opportunity to host larger gatherings. Large format pavers were used to lead guests through the space and tie together the various areas. The design also included intentional use of plants of varied scales, textures, and colors to create visual interest.
Plant selection was an important part of the overall design. Plants of different colors and sizes were added to create a cohesive and harmonious look. Close attention was paid to plant maintenance requirements, to ensure minimum effort and cost while still achieving visual interest. Additionally, easy maintenance and wildlife-friendly plants were used throughout the space. The use of edible fruit bearing plants added an extra functional and aesthetic element to the design.
Sustainability was also a key factor in the design. Incorporating wildlife-friendly plants ensured a safe and diverse habitat for pollinators and other beneficial insects. In addition, recycled materials were used during construction, and proper drainage was put in place to minimize any adverse environmental impacts.
The transformation of a sloping lawn into an entertaining space was a challenging but rewarding project. By expanding the patio and including plants of varied scales, textures, and colors, the space is now perfect for hosting larger gatherings. The selection of low-maintenance plants that are also friendly to wildlife added an element of sustainability to the project. Homeowners can benefit from a beautiful and functional outdoor space, with minimal maintenance and low environmental impact.
